Philadelphia Flower Show 2022

LANDAU helped Martha Schwartz Partners with this gorgeous and unorthodox exhibit for the 2022 Philadelphia Flower Show. The project required digital design and fabrication preparation. We worked in collaboration with the fabricator/artist Miguel Antonio Horn to come up with the best approach to meet the needed budget and constraints of the project.

The project was unique because it largely featured mushrooms. It asked the question, "Is a mushroom a flower?". It also featured a lot of educational content about mushrooms which are incredibly fascinating. The usage of mushrooms posed unique challenges that we were excited to help solve.

Production

Helping MSP only with fabrication preparation would have been a wasted opportunity. We would have built a parametric model either way, so we recommended helping them earlier in the process with parametric design. This gave the whole team an incredible amount of flexibility to adjust every aspect of the design strategy in real time, according to the needs of the project and the artistic vision of Martha and her team.

By building a parametric model, we worked methodically with tests to make sure this would work.

Development

We created a grasshopper script that integrated all of the different pieces of the installation. This allowed us to estimate weights and material quantities. It allowed us to change fundamental aspects of the design at any point in time.

Miguel Horn conducted material tests of the pieces and assembled the final installation.
