Animated Sculpture by Ned Kahn

When OLIN was working on their entry for the Jacksonville Landing competition in 2021, they were proposing a massive sculpture by the artist Ned Kahn. Composed of over 30 thousand pieces that would blow in the wind like reeds of grass, this sculpture would be the centerpiece of their dynamic and multifaceted proposal. And they asked us to model and animate this insane sculpture.

Production

The modeling and animation of this component was no small task. We had to develop tools and techniques to make it all work. Parametric tools allowed us to help the team work through a few iterations of design. OLIN was able to pull early versions for their renderings and conversations with Ned Kahn and then to use the animated version for their final video.

We worked methodically with tests to make sure this would work.

Development

We wrote custom Python scripts for Blender to translate the animation data for export to Lumion.
