Parks Needs Assessment

Video Series for LA Recreation & Parks

LANDAU was chosen to produce public engagement videos and animation for OLIN x Los Angeles Recreation & Parks (LA RAP)’s Parks Needs Assessment.

With the guidance of the Los Angeles’ city staff and the OLIN team, 7 videos were produced by LANDAU Design + Technology to bring public awareness to the Parks Needs Assessment. Out of the 7 videos, 5 are for social media posts, and two are long-form explainer videos.

This project is part of a bigger collaboration with OLIN and other firms.

2023 Climate Action Plan

Our Strategy

When the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) revealed their Climate Action Plan at their 2022 annual ASLA Conference, we at LANDAU were inspired to contribute our part.

As a design firm who often works on landscape design projects, we want to help stimulate positive changes within the profession. So we asked ourselves, what can we do?

We decided to do what we do best— storytelling and computational design.

🎥 Video Production

Storytelling and visual communication outreach is one of our many skills.

We were inspired by the bold vision of the action plan…

Landscape Architects are the only design professionals who bring all the pieces together...for a changing world.
— Eugenia Martin, FASLA, ASLA Immediate Past President

We believe that such a huge initiative deserves as much exposure as possible, and it prompted us to create a short animated explainer video. 📣

With permission from ASLA, we produced the video over several months at the end of 2022, and finally wrapped it up for release in mid January.

Collaborators: Timothy Day, Daisy Gallegos

Every video starts with a voice… and some storyboards. Let’s get to the drawing board! ✏️ 🎞️

We allowed ourselves to experiment with various animation techniques.

We did 2D motion graphics for the main video, as well as hand-drawn animated frames and 3D Blender renders for a few scenes… combating visual limitations (and climate change) with our tools & software of choice. ⚔️

And of course, a huge thank you to our audio wizard, Timothy Day, and our wonderful voice actor, Daisy Gallegos, for lending their talents in this special endeavor.

⚙️ Tool Development

Simultaneously, we are also building and workshopping new tools for landscape designers through our Rhino plug-in, Land Kit. These tools will help designers incorporate climate thinking as part of their design process in increasingly easier ways.
